In order to enjoy central air conditioning in a home, you need to have air ducts—or do you? The old model of a ventilation system made of ductwork leading from the air conditioner to each of the vents around the house is no longer the only way to enjoy central cooling. Thanks to a technology called the ductless mini split, you don’t have to rely on a space-consuming and dust-gathering set of ducts to have quality comfort sent around your house.
If you are interested in a ductless AC as a new installation, or if you already have a ductless system and it need repairs or maintenance, let Big Horn Heating & Cooling in take care of the job. We are locally-owned and operated and are experts in finding exactly what your family needs for ideal home comfort. You can depend on our technicians when it comes to keeping your household cooled down and your energy bills under control.

How Does a Ductless Air Conditioner Work?
The conventional central air conditioning system is called a split system because it consists of two separate units, one indoor and one outdoor. The indoor unit connects to the ductwork that carries the cooled air send by the blower fan to the various rooms. A ductless system is a mini split system, and has an outdoor unit that connects to multiple smaller indoor units. These individual air handlers are mounted on the walls of rooms, and each contains a refrigerant cold and blower fan so they can send the conditioned air directly into the living spaces without requiring any ductwork.
Reasons to Consider Ductless Air Conditioners
A ductless air conditioning system is not ideal for all homes, but they fit very well for certain needs and situations. Below are some of the reasons you might consider one:
- Flexibility for new construction: One of the best times to have a ductless mini split installed is for new construction, whether a whole house or for remodeling. The absence of ducts gives you greater freedom in home design. For add–on rooms, ductless systems are especially good, since you won’t have to alter the current HVAC system at all.
- Increased energy efficiency: Ductless air conditioners provide improved energy performance for a home because they don’t lose any air through leaks in air ducts. The mechanical parts in a ductless AC are also smaller than conventional air conditioners and therefore they draw on less power.
- Help control allergies and asthma: Installing a ductless AC is recommended for homes with people who suffer from allergy and asthma symptoms. Ductwork is a place where contaminants build–up over time and are then blown out with the air, circulating them around the home. Ductless mini splits offer much cleaner air.
